The Global Positioning System through time: the story of the GPS (Part 3)
Articles by Blaise

Mibeck

In the mid-1960s, three different types of weapons is pursuing a kind of satellite-navigation system. The Air Force and Navy at the same time developed the satellite Timati and 621B respectively. The army, which now develops SECOR (Sequential Correlation and range system). In 1968 the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has decided to converge NAVSEG (Navigation Satellite Executive Group) to the Navy, Air Force and Army systems (and future systems) to establish a program. NAVSEG contracted with various companies, business administration developed surveys to refine the concept of global navigation satellite system.
Of course, began the rivalry between the Air Force and Navy programs in early NAVSEG. Despite this, fundamental questions such as could have been solved in the new system work. Topics such as the number of satellites, the frequency bands and orbital geometry must be used to examine all the forces in the eye. In 1973 a plan was similar to a signal structure similar to the Air Force 621B-proposed system, satellite system on the orbital parameters and Timati those used by the Navy created.
In 1973, the Air Force has been a leader in the consolidation of the new common defense Navigation Satellite System (DNS). The JPO (Joint Program Office) was located at the USAF Space and Missile Organization. The Air Force was to design a series DNSS that the requirements of each military branch is mandated requirements. There were three different phases are used to determine the operational GPS, to make it today. From 1973 to 1978, the concept of a satellite navigation system confirmed and showed the benefits. This first phase is largely dependent on the system Timati of the Navy. Although the contractor Rockwell International from satellite was launched in 1974, the first and second NAVSEG satellite (launched in 1974 and 1977) Timati renovated satellites. It confirms the use of atomic clocks and measuring systems from time clocks in orbit.
The second phase began in 1978 and saw the first development of GPS satellites are launched and tested. Many of the GPS Block I satellites tenth year lasted about their lives, while some have failed because of the deterioration of the atomic clocks or faulty attitude control systems.
In addition to serving the mission satellite navigation NAVSEG were equipped to monitor the detonation of nuclear explosives. Space-based U.S. efforts to detect, nuclear began in 1963 with the Vela satellites, band-limited as a direct result of the test 1963 Treaty between U.S. and Soviet Union. Capacity nuclear watchdog was created on the sixth Block I GPS satellites in 1980 to life. Today, the nuclear detection is performed with the GPS satellites.
The development of the Ground Control System consists of the third phase of the GPS development. On the Block I satellites were in operation, was the prototype ground segment Vandenberg AFB in California.
In 1979, the JPO conducted with large-scale development of GPS. GPS had problems in financing between 1980 and 1989. Strangely, it is the nature of the GPS, which made it vulnerable. GPS is not a weapon system so early that it was vulnerable to cuts than the weapons systems with clearly defined tasks need financial resources. The JPO has fought cuts highlighting features such as GPS accuracy to increase bomb. In 1980 resulted in a glass 0M (FY81-FY86 for) in a system descoping 24 to 18 GPS satellites and compromises in power, nuclear and laser hardening. In addition to this requirement was imposed in 1980 with the Space Shuttle as the launch vehicle.
1983 A letter from Lieutenant General Richard Henry, commander of Air Force Space Division of General Robert Marsh expressed, Commander Air Systems Group of frustration forced to rely on the shuttle when the unmanned vehicle were starting to economically and reliably. A question was that small GPS satellites would be launched with other spacecraft, to confirm the launch of the shuttle. Deliver to the use of a manned spacecraft, the satellite into orbit was asked to mark a change militaristic man in space.
The JPO has been informed that the space shuttle to the transport vehicle, the official Air Force force her plans for the use of Atlas F boosters and Delta rocket was launched on the latest scrap Block I GPS satellites. The crash of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986 changed everything. On the Block II satellites were waiting on the block I of the fleet to be replaced. During the period of 24 months of joining the JPO launch of Delta to the IIS block. Understand
Despite an operating system from the Army as a whole is not really the potential, such as GPS, the war would change. Politics and the novelty of the GPS in many ways were barriers to the JPO to work. Remember, at this time was the only military GPS. This will change as we see in the next section.
I was thinking about purchasing the Garmin Streetpilot c340 because of the great reviews for it and the closely updated maps, however I found out that the website has discontinued the product. It made me unsure of whether or not I wanted to purchase it. Is there another closely updated GPS automotive device that is reasonably priced that you would recommend?

Best answer:

Answer by spyder461
Check out the Nuvi series Garmin GPS. It looks as though they use the same UI as the c300 series Streetpilots, and are very capable devices.

Best answer:

Answer by Andrew
I work as a delivery driver part-time and find the Garmin to be very good. I have a Streetpilot III, which is an older model and I bought refurbished. Still works great and has saved me much time and headache. It’s a dash-mount, so it just sits on the dash. Don’t go with cheap brands. Garmin, Tom-Tom, Magellan are the top brands.

I’ve used Garmin products in vehicles and in the air, they are some of the best. If you like Ebay, you can find a pretty good deal, although the big box stores are running Christmas deals too. Find the newest model you can for the price you are willing to pay.

Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!

Question by BuzzillionsEmma: Which GPS system is better: the NAVIGON 2100 Portable GPS or the TomTom ONE 3rd Edition?
I have been researching GPS systems for my car, and the most popular are the Navigon 2100 and the TomTom One 3rd Edition: http://www.buzzillions.com/gps-devices-reviews

Both got both good and bad reviews, so I’m stuck between the two. Any opinions?

Best answer:

Answer by Biker Rob
TomTom One 3rd edition, It’s the best GPS in it’s price range, you can find it on sale at $ 150. It has the latest maps from TomTom and is fast and accurate with download able points of interest and voice that make it fun to use.

Garmin is #1 in GPS in the USA, and Tom Tom is #2, the reason is they are better than the other brands out there.

What do you think? Answer below!
